Just a little note looking up Maki's Maki means "hill" in Finnish the important thing to know is what is in front of Hill. Also remember that in Finland the house had the name not the family that means if the family move their last name changed. So you will have a hard time finding just one last name. My family is also Aho/Maki from Ironwood, MI. The best source is the Dept of Migration for Finland they have an excilent web site they will help you look everyone for a small fee. You might look around your area to see if you have a Finnish-American Society inyour area. Usally someone will help you translate information that you find. Here is some other help, if you see the word poika that means son/boy you will often find it at the end of a name the means son of ... so Juho Tuomaanpoika Silvonen is Juho (John) son of Tuomaan Silvonen.Does that help? Tytar is daughter and the same holds true Anna-Liisa Heikintytar Puumala is Anna-Liisa dauter of Heiken Puumala. I hope this helps you it took me forever to find this out. I took a short course in Finnish and it has realy helped. If you choose to get information from Finland they will translate it for you so you don't have to.
