Makamson searcing for Identity

My father was James Edward Makamson,Sr. and his father was Charlie Makamson and Charlie's father I have been told, was Charles Word Makamson who was said to have been in CSA and lost his plantation near Sturgis, Mississippi, after the war. There are a large number of Makamson's still living at Sturgis, I believe.Grandfather Charlie and his brother Gay Makamson, moved to Leflore County, Mississippi, and there are a large number of their offspring living in and around Greenwood, Mississippi.I understand their people came across from Texas and Alabama in the 1800's.Rumor has it that our ancestors came from Ireland and Scotland and the surname was changed at custom from Mcamson or McKamson to Makamson or Makemson to help with the problem with so many Mc's coming to America.I think Mc means son, so Mcamson means son of son. Some of the Makamson's are known to have had a large number of males born and that seems to increase the number of Makamson's being born over the years.I have read from other relative's research that their are two distinct set of Makamson's in USA.Their are said to be the Southern Makamson's who are no relation to the Northern clan of Makamson'swho also may have come to America at about the same time from Ireland and Scotland.
