The 1890 city directory for Washington, DC, lists him as a cashier, living at 221 Third Southeast.

In the 1880 US Federal census, he is living with his grandparents, Geo. W. and Jane A. Fales in Washington, DC, along with his apparent siblings and his mother:

1880 census, Wash, DC, dwelling 45, enumerated 5 June 1880:
Geo W. Fales, age 74, clerk, US Govt, b. Maine, parents b. Maine
Jane A. Fales, age 65, wife, b. Maine
Susan L. Major, age 41, daughter, b. Maine, at home
Harry B. Major, age 18, grandson, printer, b. Dist Col, father b. VA, mother b. Maine
Frank F. Major, age 14, grandson, clerk, b. Dist Col, father b. VA, mother b. Maine
Annie W. Major, age 11, grandaughter, at school, b. Dist Col, father b. VA, mother b. Maine

In the 1870 census, this family is living together as follows in Washington, DC:
Geo. W. Fales, 62, clerk US Treasury, b. Maine
Jane A. Fales, 58, b. Maine
Susie L. Majors, 25, b. Maine
Harry Majors, 9, b. DC
Frank Majors, 5, b. DC
Anna Majors, 1, b. DC

No husband of Susan is in the household in this census either. Either he died or left.

In the 1860 census for Washington, D.C., The George Fales family of Majors living with them:
G. W. Fales, age 54, head, b. Maine
Mrs Geo. Fales, age 48, b. Maine
Bernard C. Major, age 25, druggist, b. VA
Mrs B. C. Major, age 21, b. Maine (this must be Susan)

Apparently Bernard and Susan are newly married and haven't yet had their first child in this 1860 census. According to the mortality schedule of Washington, D.C., Bernard C. Major, druggist, died in Washington , D.C., of an overdose of opium, at age 32, in August of 1870.

In the 1850 census for Washington, DC, George & Jane "Fails" are living in the Dist of Columbia with daughter Catharine, age 17, and Susan, age 12. So this family lived in Wshington DC a long time.

To link to your Bernard C. Major, I searched for other Major or Majors families in Washington, D.C., and find an old newspaper advertisement for a Wash., DC, "druggist & apothecary" named John R. Major, in an 1879 city directory, with his shop at 7th & 8th St., Wash., DC. I wonder if this is the father of or a brother to Bernard C. Certainly, it's perhaps coincidental that Bernard was a druggist too. Susie L. Major, widow of Bernard, is also in this 1879 city directory, living at 1250 - 8th NW. Harry B. Major is also listed living at 1250 - 8th NW, occupation Printer.

Searching for more info for this John R. Major, I find he applied for a passport from Wash, DC, in 1889, stating that he was born in Alexandria, VA, August 26, 1837, and his father was a "naturalized citizen" of the US. When John applied for his passport, he was described as 5 ft 7 inches tall, hazel eyes and black hair, age 51.

In the 1850 census for Baltimore, MD, this John R. Major is living with his father James J. Major, born England, and mother Edith, with siblings Laura, Geo. C., and Adalade.

Is it possible that Geo. C. could actually be Bernard C. Major?? Not sure.

I hope this helps you and gives you some leads.
