A biography of Adolph A. Major, Plentywood, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 811. Adolph's grandfather, a tailor by trade, was an early pioneer of LaCrosse WI.

An interesting story is told of the origination of the name Major. "It is told it was given to one of the early generations of the family by a teacher who had children of this Polish family in the schoolroom. While making record of his classes he came to some who spelled their name "Mazurkiewicz". Regarding this as a burden which not be borne through life by the little folks, the teacher, with an air of disdain, said "Call it Major," and thus wrote the name which endowed future members of this Slavic family with a new designation."

Adolph W. Major was born, 30 Jun 1885, son of Rudolph H. and Johanna (Bach) Major. Rudolph H. was born in New York City, 5 Nov 1860, but as a child was taken by his parents to LaCrosse, WI. Johanna Bach was born in Milwaukee, WI, daughter of Adam Bach, a stone mason at LaCrosse.

Adolph A. Major completed his educaton and at age 17, 11 Apr 1902, accepted a position as stenographer and clerk with the C.M. and St.P Railway Company at LaCrosse. In the fall of 1907, he went to Wheaton, MN, as a stenographer for F.W. Murphy, a leading lawyer of the city. For a term he was a reporter in the District Court of Breckenridge, MN. In Mar 1910, he moved to Culbertson, MT, and proved up on a homestead claim. He became a secretary and stenographer for the Valley Land Company at Culbertson. After claiming title to his homestead claim, Adolph moved to Plentywood where he worked as a clerk in the assessors office, next was a deputy in the clerk and recorder's office, next was in partnership in the Abstract and Title Company, then was made recorder and clerk of Sheridan County, MT. As a boy he had studied instrumental music and became a trombone player. In Plentywood he became a member of the town orchestra and organized the Major Orchestra and played for dances and social events.

On 23 Dec 1908, Wheaton, MN, Adolph Major married Miss L. Pearl Warner, born near Wheaton, daughter of William A. and Edna (Tubbs) Warner.
