While searching Texas records for members of my family, I found this, which I had not seen before:

Texas Newspaper Abstracts, Deaths, Vol. 2
Issue Sept 25, 1868.
The State Gazette says a deep gloom has been cast over society in Austin by the death of Mrs. Eliza H. Major, wife of Gen. James P. Major, late of the Confederate Army, second daughter of Dr. John G. Chalmers, deceased.

Perhaps this will help someone in their research. As far as I can tell, this MAJOR is not of my family.
