Origins of the Mays/Maize (or any other spelling) Surname?

Thanks to a very kind man in France, received quite a lot of info on my Mother's people. While researching some of the new surnames I blunder upon quite a lot of dif spellings of the our surname. This of course leads me to the question--Where were these people from originally. Does anyone have a clue? I've been told my Mays/Maize were Scottish, no proof of course. Any and all opinions welcome and I'm talking all spellings of this surname, Mays, Maize, Maze (found most often in my French surname searches), Mayse & more. Hope to hear back soon!!! Toni Maize
