It sounds like your Maitland family is connected to mine. I have been tracing the Maitland family in Scotland, Ontario and the US - especially DeKalb County, Illinois. Is it the Thomas Maitland Sr.(1866,Ontario)or the Thomas Jr.(1908) Iowa, that you refer to? The James and Sarah (Renwick) Maitland family that immigrated to Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois came in 1868 or 1869 from Ontario. There are additional children who didn't immigrate with the parents and don't show up on the 1870 & 1880 Census Returns. I have lots of information to share if you believe this is the same family.
