Alexander Maitland and Margaret Thomson were married 29 August 1788 at Culsalmond. Alexander was a farmer. They had five children; Alexander (christened 19 August 1789), James Keith (christened 24 June 1791), John (christened 11 June 1793), Isabella (christened 20 June 1795), and Francis (christened 8 September 1800). Isabella remained in Scotland, married William Anderson, and died in 1870. Francis married Jane Cruickshank, emigrated to Ontario, Canada and died in 1860. James Keith Maitland, my ancestor, married Helen Booth, moved off to Fordyce, Banffshire, and died in 1844.
Alexander Maitland, husband of Margaret Thomson, was christened on 30 June 1761 at Auchterless. He was a son of Robert Maitland and Margaret Smith who resided at Templand in Auchterless. Robert and Margaret were married at Auchterless on 26 August 1760. Margaret was originally from Turriff.
According to the Ancestral File of the Family History Center of the LDS Church, Robert Maitland, husband of Margaret Smith and father of Alexander, was christened on 24 April 1712 in Auchterless, a son of Adam Maitland. I find this unlikely as he would have been 48 years old at the time of his marriage and the name Adam was not used further in the family. I am much more inclined to believe that Robert was the Robert Maitland who was christened on 10 May 1724, a son of Alexander Maitland, born about 1685.
