Colonel Maitland was my great grandfather. He served in the Indian Mutiny 1857/8, and I have his campaign medal. He was Military Attache at the British Embassy in Constantinople during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877 and later Director General of the Royal Ordnace factories. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1887. He was particularly proud of his authorship of the the article on Gunmaking and Gunnery in the great 9th edition of the Encyclopedia Brittannica (1875).
The photograph would be of his first wife Elizabeth Baillie who died in 1877. I am descended from his second wife, Caroline Metcalfe, who he married in 1883.
