Hello Sarah,
There is a number of John Maitlands and do not have any of them connected to a Speirs, but I will definately watch for that union. My Scottish Maitland line is from my mothers family and my Irish Speers are my husbands side, mind you Speers, are known to originate from around Glasgow area.
I will contact you directly if I find any connection.
