Ian, the letter that I hold comes to me via my gr-grandMother Whiteside who maiden was Buckalew. Over there it would be Buccleuch of clan Scott. I have no idea just why she saved this letter but, know of no connection to either the Buccleuch or Whitesides. I have searched all possibilities and came to the conclusion that this intimate piece of Maitland past history righfully belonged with them. To that end, I have left a message for all to read and ponder. That the members of the family can agree to the best disposition of this letter appears to have happened.A surviving direct descendent of the author of it appears to be the agreed upon custodian. Once he takes possesion it may be again decided to deposit it in Scotland. That matter is out of my hands and I can only hope that the letter will stay with those who will care and cherish this small window into their past. My best regards
Warren Whiteside
