We've always suspected that the surname Lauderdale was given to illegitimate children of the Earl of Lauderdale (or perhaps his sons living at home) but have so far seen no convincing evidence. A problem is that the surname Lauderdale does not appear in the Borders or Edinburgh area - where the Earls lived - until 1884- the death of the 12th Earl, but Lauderdale does appear as a surname in Galloway in 1737.
The 8th Earl was prolific, with 9 recorded children.
Clan Maitland recognises all of Maitland descent as kinsfolk.See our web site www.lauderdale.u-net.com
