Pamela,
According to my listing of Ayrshire OPR marriages and births, only 3 Patersons are recorded as marrying Mairs between 1769 and 1820. The first was an ancestor of mine, the third was an Ann Paterson to Andrew Mair in October 1820, but the second was a Mary Paterson to John Mair on 17 November 1798 which would seem to fit your time frame. I have seen many given names mis-stated or mis-spelt by OPR scribes including Mary for Margaret so I would not dismiss this possibility. Interestingly, no offspring to this marriage are recorded in the Ayrshire OPRs but this may only mean that they are recorded in another county. My other database which records all Mair references from other sources such as Census material, does not contain any reference to your Mathew or Helen in Ayrshire which increases the possibility that the births occurred elsewhere or are perhaps were just not recorded in church records. I assume you have inspected the death certificates of both Mathew and Helen for family information? Hope this helps.
