Brian & Ian,
I have just noticed your various posts to genforum, and have read them with great interest. I'm quite certain that we are all related to the same Mair & related families of Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland.
My line is:Me-Donald Lawson-George Lawson(b 1863 Ontario, Canada)-John Lawson(b 1816 Newburgh, Fife, Scotland), who md (1) Ellen/Helen Patterson (2) Margeret Patterson, daus of John Paterson & Margaret Bryce of Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland, where Helen & Margaret were b in 1829 & 1830. Theie brother, James, last ch of John Paterson & margaret Bryce was b Mar. 26, 1832.
I need lots of help in finding names of parents & siblings of John Paterson b abt 1798 in Davel. He md (1) Margaret Bryce June 29, 1822 in Darvel, and they had 9 ch before she died May 8, 1833. John md (2) Isabelle Miller July 28, 1838 in Darvel, but they were listed in 1841 in Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with their 2 ch & 4 of his ch by Margaret Bryce. They all moved to West Troy, Albany Co, NY & on to Ontario Canada by 1850's, where Isabelle died & John md (3) Janet Davidson & where John died Sept. 12, 1885 in Wingham, Huron, Ontario, Canada.
My best clue to identity of the mother of John Paterson is a record of the death of "Elisea"(Eliza?) b Jan 1826 & d Jan 16, 1826 in Darvel, with record states she is the dau of "John Paterson, step-son of William Little,Drummer in Darvel". Wm Little md Isabel Young, dau of ?, Dec 13 1806 in Darvel, and md Magaret Lochore (b Mar 24 1776, dau of John Lochore & Janet Paterson?, who were md Dec 6 1771 in Darvel). I have not found any record of Wm Little's marriage to a Mrs Paterson, who would have been the mother of John Paterson?
Another clue is the name of the eldest surving son of John Paterson & Margaret Bryce, Micael Cochran Paterson, b abt 1825 in Darvel. Their was a Michael Cochran of Darvel, who md an Agnes MAIR abt 1794/5. Their was also a Michael Cochran md to a Margaret Young July 16 1825 in Darvel
My grt grmother, Margaret Patterson Lawson, kept a photo album that contained several pictures of members of her mother's Bryce family, and my 2nd grt Uncle James Patterson kept a diary in which he mentioned correspondence with members of his mother's Bryce family.
Photo album contained a picture of James Bryce, who I believe was the James b abt 1815 in Darvel, son of Martha Aiton & Alexander Bryce, son of James Bryce & Agnes MAIR, of Darvel.
Also a picture of Agnes Bryce, who I believe was Agnes (Lawson) Bryce, b abt 1829 in Darvel, wife of Thomas Bryce b abt 1826 in Darvel, son of Alex'r Bryce & Martha Aiton of Darvel.
Diary mentioned correspndence with Alexander Bryce of Glasgow, who was either the Alex'r b abt 1834 in Darvel son of Alexander & Martha Aiton, or the Alex'r b abt 1852 in Darvel, son of Thomas Bryce & Agnes Lawson of Darvel.
Also, diary mentioned correspondence with Margaret Bryce MAIR of "Wrotex" Ontario, who may have been the Margaret b 1854 in Darvel, dau of Thomas Bryce & Agnes Lawson of Darvel. I have no idea which part of Ontario that Wrotex was in, do you? I have not found a marriage of a Magaret Bryce to ? MAIR, or any approriate census listing.
Diary also mentioned correspondence with an alexander Bryce of Phiiladelphia, PA, USA. I have no clues to this reference, at all.
More later,
Richard Lawson
Niangua, MO, USA
