Census records were in U.S. I don't know if the line is Scottish or not.
The earliest date/location, of which I have reasonable certainty, is the birth of James Hamilton Mains in Richland Co., Ohio, in 1843, as declared by him in his Civil War enlistment. His father was John, reportedly born 1809 in New York, but this information came from son James' death certificate, and therefore may not be reliable. John's parents were reported as James Mains and Rebecca Marsh.
