Mahony Family Genealogy Forum

Greg, my data is very limited and I have given most of it in my earlier posts. Timothy and Margaret Mahony emigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1839 aboard the Navarino. Timothy was the first RC schoolteacher in Maitland I think. Timothy's father Daniel was a publican in Cork City. You can find listings for him in the 1845 Post Office Directory as a vintner. In fact you can find a whole lot of Mahonys listed as vinters and victuallers. Daniel Mahony is listed as a vintner at both 103 Great Britain Street and 223 Dublin Street. I'm presuming one of them is the father. We visited Cork last year, as well as Youghal, Dungarvan, Waterford, Dublin and Oldcastle. Great for photos; not so great for records. My impression is that we are considerably richer in our records at the Australian end and that the Irish in fact are learning quite a bit about their ancestry through us. Their cemeteries for example are quite disappointing in terms of old graves. Many of the Mahonys I have found on GenForum are relatively recent arrivals in Australia as well. Mine date from 1839 and would seem to be one of the earliest lines to arrive, if not the earliest. I have done a bit of work on them, as with all families from which I descend. Have also cross referenced against Griffiths Valuation online and 1845 Cork PO Directory online.
