MAHORNEY, John W.
My husband's grandmother, Martha Ellen Fiscus married a Dr. John W. Mahorney on April 30, 1891 in Owen County, Indiana. On October 18, 1893, she married for the second time in Coal City, Indiana, to my husband's grandfather, Joseph Newton Greenwood. The wedding license lists her as Martha Ellen Mahorney.
Sometime between 1891-1893 she accidentally shot and killed Mahorney when he handed her his loaded gun and it went off.
There are no records of Mahorney in Owen County. We searched the local paper's microfilm and no mention was made of his death. There are no land records, he was not buried there, none of the locals in this small town ever heard of him. No mention of a Dr. Mahorney in the medical society, etc. The family never spoke of the unfortunate accident.
All we can think is that he lived elsewhere, came to marry Martha Ellen in her home town and then took her back home wherever that might have been.
Does anyone have a John Mahorney in their line who died between 1891-1893? If so, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks.
