Anne, That is an interesting question in that I can only say
maybe. Searches of John Mahoneys are as common as the rocks in West Cork.
My grandparents on the Mahoney side did not come to Westfield, Mass.(next to West Springfield) until the mid 1880's.The were from the townland of Carrigroe in the parish of Desertserges(near Bandon). There were many John Mahoneys in the family and I am having a tough time lining them up.The other interesting part of your question is that my mahoneys were related through marriage to Rileys living in Westfield.
Also, in the 1890's there were over 40 adult Mahoneys listed in the city directory for Westfield, Mass. For such a small town that is significant.C.Mahoney
