Your question about who started the Mahoney name is an interesting one. I'll try to answer. The Gaelic name is
Mathghamhna. It has been anglicized to Mahony, Mahoney
O'Mahony, O'Mahoney and Mahon and sometimes MacMahon. The O'Mahony family is descended from Milesius, King of Spain through the line of his son Heber. The founder of the family is supposedly Cormac, King of Munster, A.D. 483, of the Eoganacht tribe. The O'Mahonys were Lords and Princes of Iveagh and Kinalmeaky and their possesions and castles were in the counties of Cork and Kerry. I suspect it is not simply the name William that gives you your sese of greatness it is more the fact that you are descended from royalty. Cornelius Mahoney
