Archibald was born, 3 Apr 1869, near Rochester, NY,son of Alderman D. and Janette (Janes) Mahon. Alderman was born 1844 in Indiana and died in New York City, 1906.Janette Janes was born in 1846 in Michigan.
Archibald was educated in the public schools of Rochester, NY. He served a long apprenticeship in surveying and engineering in Rochester, where he did municipal work. For two years he was with theBuffalo, Rochester, Pittsburgh Railwayas transit man and draftsman. In 1891, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where he was deputy county surveyor.Then he became resident engineer for the Great Northern Railway at the Sioux Falls headquarters.
In 1893, Archibald located to Harlem, MT, moving to Glasgow
and then Helena. In 1894, he was appointed county surveyor of Valley County and held that office until 1898; in 1895 he was appointed engineer and superintendent of irrigation at Fort Belknap, MT, until 1897.In 1898, Archibald was chosen to represent Valley County in the State Senate and was re-elected in 1902 and 1906. In 1906-1911, Glasgow, MT, he gave all his time to engineering and irrigation work. He was appointed to the office of state engineer and began official duties, Mar 1911.He was reappointed in 1915 and 1919.Archibald held several other distinguished offices.
In 1904, Glasgow, MT, Archibald married Miss Frances G. Hoyt, born in St. Paul, MN, and died at Glasgow in 1907, leaving two children, Hobart H., b. 8 Aug 1907, and Archibald Warham, Jr., b. 10 Jan 1906, d. 26 Feb 1913.
In 1909, St. Paul, MN, Archibald married Miss Ocie M. Hazzard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Hazzard of St. Paul, MN.
