1812 - 1813 is standing at the crumbling cliff into the abyss of Irish prehistory.

I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,000,000 surviving rcds for abt 65% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800.

Note 1 - Without a KNOWN parish, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 35%.

Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.

Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).

For William Mahar (+variants) B 1811-1813 somewhere in Ireland with the father's forename unknown, I found 25 rcds on name variants - too many to summarize here. At this early date, the probability that rcds of the B event survived and have been digitized is less than 10%.

I have a few insights that may help.
1) Irish males generally emigrated between the ages of 16 and 24. This would put his emigration date at 1834 +/- 4 yrs.
2) The famine of 1845-1850 spured a burst of emigration especially after "black 47." Unmarried males, especially by younger sons who had nothing to inherit.
3) The proportion of women emigrants increased substantially after 1850.
4) Women emigrated between the ages of 18 and 26, unless accompanied by older males.
5) For their transit to America:
5) a) Passenger lists - http://immigrantships.net
5) b) New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957.
5) c) Http://www.castlegarden.org for N.Y. arrivals prior to Ellis Island
5) d) The Mass. Archives for immigrants arriving in Boston.
5) e) Passenger lists: http://aad.archives.gov/aad/index.jsp
6) The 1st census to list children's names and ages was in 1850.

Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
