Maher name origins?

John, in maybe a poorly worded response, people back then got their surnames usually one of four ways: Some physical attribute (my husband's last name means Long and big in Danish, he comes from a "large" family in a country known for large people so they must have really Been large; he is 6'4" and 260 lbs.); their occupation ( another side of my family is French and their name is Cloutier which means: a person who sold nails"); a region or town they came from ( another limb of my family named Thierry probably came from Chateau Thierry in the Champagne country of France; or they could have taken their name from someone who "owned" them or whose land they worked or the clan they owed allegiance to, like the Maher/Meagher sept of Tipperary County, IR.I understand the the Mahers were one of the original Irish clans/septs.They, unlike many of the septs, did not disband. They did owe allegiance to a larger clan and that is why when you look for their tartan somewhere you must search out the leige that they were beholden to ( that they had promised to take orders from and to fight for in time of war.) Yes, their must have been "royalty" of a sort for the Mahers at one time in Tipperary as they have a coat of Arms and all, but many of that sept were sent in exile to the NW area of the country when Irish Catholics were given the choice of becomming Protestant and bowing to the English or exiling to the NW.This was done long ago to many who wouldn't bow to England. My people came over here to the US from County Mayo probably for that reason and not from Tipperary. This is a guess for my family as I have yet to find just where in Mayo they were from etc. But I DO know about the exiling et al.About the book, THE FOUR TIPPERARY SEPTS, who is the author and can I get this book? Send info on this if you will.I have a picture of the coat of arms if you are interested.Am going to the Isle in September. Will try to find out more about our Maher/Meagher lineage if not your particular family.Good hunting.
