A biography of John Charles Maher is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 836 & 837. The grandfather, Timothy Maher, was born in 1895, in County Tipperary, Ireland, and lived to age 102. He came to America in early life, lived in Canada, and subsequently was a pioneer homesteader near Lansing, IA. He died near Lansing in 1907. He had two sons: James, a businessman who died in St. Paul, MN, in 1904; John F., bor 1849, Montreal, Canada, raised and educated in Iowa, moved to St. Paul, married Margaret Horrigan, worked for the Great Northern Railway, died at St. Paul, 1909. Margaret Horrigan was born, 1857, St. Paul, and died there in 1882. John F. & Margaret Maher had four children: Ella (St. Paul); John Charles (MT); T.J. (Clerk of District Court, Spokane, WA); D.H. (postal service, St. Paul, MN).
John C. Maher was born, 4 Apr 1877, son of John F. and Margaret (Horrigan) Maher. John was educated in St. Paul, graduating from high school in 1895. For two years he was a student at St. John's University, leaving to become an office boy (in St. Paul) of the Great Northern Railway. He later became a rate clerk, and in 1901 left St. Paul and became contracting freight agent for the Great Northern at Spokane, WA. Later was promoted to traveling freight agent and in Jul 1918 went to Butte, MT, as district traffic agent.
In Nov 1914, Spokane, WA, John C. Maher married Miss Mildred Simmons, daughter of John W. and Martha (Lyman) Simmons. Her father was a fruit grower and orcharist at Greenacres, WA. Mrs. Maher was a graduate of Sauk Center, MN, high school. Maher son: John Robert, b. 18 Oct 1919.
