Joyce,
I also came upon your family's information, but I don't think we are visibly related on the CT side. My family traces through Naugatuck/Waterbury, CT. I lose track of my gg grandfather's family before the 1870 census (he was not listed in 1860). I need to find where they entered the U.S. (presumably settling in Naugatuck ca. 1842)
Tombstones, however, lead me to a specific area in Ireland and I think it's possible that siblings may be related from that end. It's possible that members of the Ireland family settled in different places. (I'm not sure my ancestors would have been in the British army, as your Michael, though. They were Catholic and one of the tombstones is from a Union soldier in the Civil War. There were Anglo-Irish marriages, though. Patrick's wife was a Butler.)
(My) Patrick and Ann had four children: James P. (my g. grandfather), Josephine A., Eliza, and Catherine. In 1870, when Catherine was 22, another person, Nellie Purcell, also 22, was living with them in Naugatuck. Nellie was born in Ireland, Catherine in CT. Catherine and Josephine were both teachers (Josephine retired from a long teaching career in Waterbury and Naugatuck). I lose Catherine in the 1880 census.
James P. had several children. I can track some of them, but lose others. Between the 1900 and the 1910 census son John likely married (or died?). There are many John Mahers to follow from here and I'm not sure which is correct. Between the 1920 and the 1930 census I lose Raymond.

I trust that links from these forums will start to happen regarding all of this. As an unexpected bonus, this morning I found my aunt's grandson looking for information about her! Time to call Maine.
Wishing you well,
Janet
