William Henry Mahaney (son of Thomas Mahaney and Mary Ellen Hunger)was born 7 July 1844 in Hardy County, Va. (now West Va.);and died 10 April 1944 in California, Pa.) He was my mother's grandfather. He was a soldier in the 85th Regiment of the Pa. infantry in the Civil War from Sept. 18, 1861 until Nov. 22, 1864. He was 3 months shy of 100 when he died. He met and shook hands with Abraham Lincoln during the war. Since I was 1 year old when he died, Mother tells me I sat on the lap of someone who shook hands with Lincoln. (I love the story.) I have a little info on his parents, grandparents, but not his brothers and sisters. And of course I have information on his children, one of whom was my grandmother, Pearl Mahaney Crock. I'd be very interested in more information on his family.
