I found the following write-up from the Gwinnett County paper:
"DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS presented to:
Private 1st Class Emory Mahaffey, Medical Detachment, 28th Infantry, 1st Division, Canligne, France, May 28-29, 1918.On his way to a machine-gun emplacement to succor men who had been injured there, he stopped to give first aid to Pvt. Jay L. Antes who lay mortally wounded and exposed to machine-gun fire.While performing this heroic aid, he was killed.
TheDistinguished Service Cross was posthumously awarded and presented to his mother, Mrs. Victoria Mahaffey.Emory was a native of Gwinnett County, Georgia, but lived in Atlanta."
