Sue,

Thanks for the quick response. (Please disregard my other message to the same effect on that un-related thread!)

Anyway, what I would suggest is combing the old Yearbooks, starting with the earliest one, and find the mentions of Sarah being a "Beall" or "Bell" and finding out what the basis for those speculations are. (i.e. is there any document reference given for the name, or is the entire basis purely argumentative?)

If the whole thing is purely argumentative, then really its just a matter of different interpretations of the same facts. If there is some reference given in those old Yearbooks, though, it might point the way to some document or source that can help clear things up.

At this point, I am still not convinced enough either way to change her name from Sarah Bell (or Beall), per tradition; although it certainly does seem that she was not a daughter of Ninian by blood. I am inclined to agree with you and Don on this matter, since the arguments either way seem fairly evenly matched and the Beall name comes from Magruder's who lived long before we did (and some Beall's too, if there is any credence given to Lt. Col. Fielder Montgomery Magruder Beall's accounts given by RRR in his last post) per the texts.

I would also be very interested to find out the actual quote where you say you have found she was a "cousin or (other) close relative"...since there might be some document or source for whoever made that statement, that likewise might help.

Plus, if you come across any references to the Elizabeth Magruder - John Pottenger (Pottinger) marriage and her land (Craighnaigh / Magruder's Delight) changing hands (ca. 1684 - 1687) that might help too.

I know that's a lot of work, and I understand your comment about it being time-consuming and all; and I am more than willing to wait and keep an eye out for whatever you might come across. In the meantime, I am scouring through "Across the Years in PG Co." to look at their sources and land transactions to find any possible clues.

JD
