I hesitate to speak but it certainly has been the tradition of the Magruders as reflected in the American Clan Gregor Society records and other publications that Sarah, the wife of Samuel Magruder, was a Beall. Further that she was the daughter of Ninian Beall. No proof has been cited. Many dispute this view. She does not appear in Ninian's will (could she have been provided for earlier?).The Bealls take vehement exception to the claim. There are many proofs of close relationships (and inter marriages) between the two families. So who was this Sarah?
There are claims that she was a Beall (Bell). For example, Lt. Col. Fielder Montgomery Magruder Beall's citation of "sisters" Mary Bell who imigrated in 1666 and Sarah Bell who arrived in 1675 and appeared in 1685 with 25 immigrant families (including Edward and Tabitha Willett, testors to Samuel Magruder's will; and Edward Willett who also was testor to Ninian Beall's will) gathered by the Rev. Nanthaniel Taylor in a settlement called New Scotland to people a Presbyterian church on land donated by Ninian Beall. He muddies the scene a bit by claiming that these two "sisters" married (Mary to Peter Elsey 11 Nov 1672; Sarah to James English in 1681) but claims they "must have been very attractive Scottish lassies " (and widows or divorced!) because Sarah married Samuel Magruder in 1686 and Mary married John Pottinger about the same time (and Pottinger is believed to be the "brother" named as overseer of Samuel Magruder's will who subsequnetly married Samuel's sister, Elizabeth).
I know that some have dismissed some of Col. Fielder Beall's "findings," but his presentation does suggest how Sarah could be a Beall (Bell) even if not the daughter of Ninian. Has anyone dug into this theory?
