As you note, there was a large time difference between when Alexander wrote his will, and his son Samuel later had his first children [10 years]. All the will can be used for is to show that the families were acquainted, not evidence of a marriage that wouldn't take place for 10 years. Considering the stature of Ninian BEALL in the community, I imagine that he knew most people in the area, and it would not be at all unusual for non-relatives to name a child after him. The same phenomenon that caused children to later be named George Washington, but on a smaller local scale. You stated; "That, plus finding a "Sarah" and a "Mary" as daughters for Ninian Beall would probably have led many to believe that these two sisters were the Sarah and Mary that married Samuel Magruder and John Pottinger, respectively. (i.e. finding a "match" to the names.)" ========== The problem is, that there is no evidence or record that Ninian had a daughter named Sarah, so the theory wasn't formed from matching of names. The theory that Samuel MAGRUDER's wife Sarah was a BEALL can't be used as evidence to show the reverse, that Ninian BEALL had a daughter named Sarah. Another strike against the theory that she was a BEALL, is that there is evidence, Ninian BEALL's son Ninian BEALL, Jr. married Elizabeth MAGRUDER, daughter of Samuel MAGRUDER and Sarah. Were Sarah a daughter of Ninian Sr., that would make Ninian Jr. her brother, and Ninian Jr.'s wife Elizabeth MAGRUDER would have been his niece by blood. A marriage of that close a degree was strictly forbidden then as now. Yes, Ninian did have a daughter Mary, but she married Andrew HAMILTON [HAMBLETON]. In 1706, Ninian BEALL gave his daughter Mary a young Negro woman Nanny, age 5. The will of Ninian BEALL gave his son-in-law Andrew HAMBLETON (HAMILTON) a Negro woman named Allie. (MD Wills 14:504) The will of Andrew HAMILTON (MD Cal. of Wills 4:211) named his wife Mary. The inventory of Andrew HAMILTON's estate listed a young Negro woman named Nanny, and a Negro woman named Ailie who would be the same given by her father Ninian BEALL. When faced with that reality, some Internet genealogists have chosen to list Mary as having married both POTTENGER and HAMILTON. That is impossible, as both their wives named Mary were having children at the same time over a span of several years. Notify Administrator about this message?
