Henry Alexander Magnuson

HALLOWELL Henry Alexander "Hank" Magnuson, 74, of Hallowell died July 24, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, after a long illness.

Hank was born in Salem, Mass., May 19, 1928, the son of Henry A. Magnuson and Ruth (Harris) Magnuson. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1952. He was a veteran of World War II, Japan Occupation. He married Janet Woodward Magnuson in 1970 in New Hampshire.

Hank worked as a newscaster at television station WHO AM-FM in Des Moines, Iowa from 1952 to 1955, when he became news director at television station KTVO in Ottumwa, Iowa. He came to Maine in 1957 and worked in the news department at television station WCSH until 1965. After a brief period as public relations director for the Maine Republican State Committee, Hank joined the Guy Gannett organization as executive director of news and public affairs at television station WGAN AM-FM until 1973. He received National Headliners Awards in 1970 and 1972 and five United Press International state and regional awards, and was elected to the board of directors, Radio-Television News Directors Association until he left broadcasting in 1973.

Hank was a founding member and past president of the Maine Public Relations Council, having drafted the original bylaws and having served in various council offices. Prior to being named manager of external affairs at Madison Paper Industries in 1989, he was chief executive of the Paper Industry Information office in Augusta for 16 years. During his time with PIIO, Hank was chief industry spokesperson and lobbyist at the State House. Hank retired in 1993.

Hank served as a member and chairman of the Hallowell Board of Appeals from 1993 to the present.

Mr. Magnuson is survived by his wife; one son, Henry A. Magnuson III and his wife, Ann, of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; two daughters, Elaine Elliott and her husband, David, of Yarmouth, and Kimberly Magnuson; three grandchildren, Gregory and Elizabeth Magnuson and Edward Elliott.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hallowell Cemetery with the Rev. George Hickey officiating.
