Susan, I don't really know the answer to this, but have you considered the possibility that it was Peregrine Mackaness' wife who was actually related to Margaret Miles? We don't know anything about her except that her name was Mary, but the record of her name appears quite a bit later than the first records of Peregrine, so it's even possible there was an earlier wife.

From my own research, and that of a couple of other Magness researchers, it's beginning to look as though Peregrine Mackaness came to Maryland from Lincolnshire around 1729, probably from Fosdyke or Holbeach. The earliest record in my files that associates him with William Miles is in 1732 and looks as though Miles was helping to pay one of his debts to a Dr. Patrick Sim.

If any of this rings a bell, and you have more questions, feel free to get back to me.

By the way, are you getting these records from the Family Tree Maker CD of Maryland probate records? I've been trying to find somebody who wouldn't mind looking up the Peregrine Mackaness references for me. (There are about ten or twelve of them, with a weird variety of spellings.)

Harriet
