I did a great deal of ferreting out any info. within the family about the validity of this rumor. Original church records were destroyed in a fire and James Ridgell did swear to the parantage of Edward so that Edward might enter into a Merchant Marine training program in Alemeda Calif. during the second world war. This document was witnessed by Susanna Somers the second wife of Wesley Somers.
The census of 1920, lists Edward as a step son, however, which could be a mistake on the part of the census taker, but the marriage between Dorothy and James took place after Edward's birth. Edward's real baptimal record has been lost. St. Mathews Church in St. Matys County has no record of it. James might have married Dorothy after the birth. I don't think we'll ever really know but nothing conclusive in the way of proof one way or the other has been found...Edward Ridgell Jr. 1947-
