Magills IN-1840s>KS-1850s>CA-1890s

Seeking info on my great-great grandfather's parents. His name was JOHN MARSHALL MAGILL (known as Marshall), born abt. 1841, apparently in Indiana (?).

John Marshall Magill married MALINDA JANE PATTON in 1872 in Chase Co., Kansas. She was born 1852, in Sullivan Co., Indiana, to John Patton and Mary Ann Ring.

John Marshall and Malinda Jane appear on the 1880 census in Lakin, Harvey, Kansas. We know they were in San Bernardino, California by 1892 at latest as their youngest child was born there that year. There are indications that they may have arrived in CA as early as the 1880s. John Marshall came first by wagon. He may have driven a herd of cattle which he sold for cash to by his farm near Rialto. Malinda and children are believed to have followed by train some months/years later.

Thus far, I've had no luck finding my gr.gr. grandfather, Marshall, on any census prior to 1880. I often find spelling variations on the Magill surname, so this may be part of the problem (the 1880 transcription I have lists the family as MHGILL).

It seems Marshall may have had one or more brothers who came to California with him, but this too is unverified.

Help! I'm at a roadblock!
