The origin of the Maget name is a puzzle to me.A word spelled m-a-g-e-t exists as a name in several countries: U.S.A., France and Germany and apparently among some Jews. I suspect that the spelling of Maget is a spelling and linguistic coincidence in different languages. Its pronunciation probably varies greatly.
The British version seems exclusively Madgett in the present time.
I have already noted your posting about the Magets who came from Holland.Certainly there were Dutch traders in colonial Virginia; I think the Dutch brought in the first slaves. The Maget-Holland connection is possible.
However, going through the names in the early censuses of Virginia left me with the impresssion that the white colonials were almost all Welsh and English.
I have collected quite a pile of Maget/Madget/Magett data that I cannot fit together very well.I do think that there is enough data on this relatively small family with a unique name to enable some researcher to fit them all together in one tree.I am not that researcher.
I am thoroughly puzzled by the Magets, especially their origins. I have only theories and would be happy to see your complete research. Contact: [email protected]
I have a long letter on this subject from a modern British Madgett if you want it.
Sincerely,
John Mitchell
