Thank you for your response to my query re the Magee family of Moneygore. I am sure you know that Moneygore is a very small area. It is a very pretty place with an Orange Lodge on top of a hill surrounded by fields with cows. There are no more Magee people living in that area anymore. I just asked a friend who lives in the area and her response was : There are no Magees there now and probably not for many years. There were Magees who lived up the Lisnamulligan Road but the last of them passed away about 40 years ago. It was a man named Tommy Magee and his daughter, Margaret. When Tommy died, Margaret went to live in Belfast as far as I know in a care home." This friend went on to give me marriage and birth records of Magees in the Rathfriland area.
Marriage:
John Magee married Nancy Craig on May 2,1850 at Hilltown Presbyterian Church.
Eliza Magee (my ancestor) married William Patterson on March 10, 1852 at the 1st Rathfriland Presbyterian Church.
William Magee married Margaret Conn on November 17,1865 at Clonduff Presbyterian Church.
James Magee married Margt. Loughlin on April 15, 1879 at Hilltown C. of I.
Eliza Magee married Alex. Johnston on March 12, 1915 at the Rathfriland Reformed Church.
Hessie Magee married Alex. James Priestly on September 24, 1919 at the Rathfriland Reformed Church.
Births in all of Rathfriland Area:
William Magee born May 20, 1869- Father:Robert and Mother: Catherine Magowan
John Magee born March 3, 1871 with the same above parents.
Essey Magee born May 11, 1873 with the same above parents.
Ellen Magee born December 18, 1873. Father: Michael; Mother: Margaret Toner. This child is perhaps Catholic
Magee is also a Catholic name and there are records going back to the 1600's of Magee people at Moneygore. The earliest record was of an Owen Magee and I believe he was Catholic.
My friend assures me that there are no more Magee people in Moneygore or Lisnamulligan but that there are many Magees in other townlands not so far away and probably Catholic. There might be records in those churches. I have not come across your David Magee but agree that he might be from County Down and perhaps Moneygore. Moneygore is certainly a pretty place but I doubt you would gain any information on David Magee if that is the purpose of your visit. Thank you for taking the time to respond to me and I hope you have a great trip this summer.
Best regards, Gail Wittich [email protected]
