My maiden name is Maestas, over the years I have heard it pronounced in various ways..

My (long i) estes
Ma estes
Mae (log a) estes
Mestas - Mes tas

My grandfather's family spelled theirs Mestas and pronounced is as such. Somewhere my dad's was mispelled as Maestas and he has always used that. Probably a birth or baptism certificate. Anyway, the way we pronounced it was the My-estes version. I think it might have a lot to do with what region or dialect you're family spoke. Hope this helps.
