Because I have been researching Madrays in SC I have come across several Madrays who were listed as "colored." I saw them on the 1870 Census index, I believe. They were freed slaves is my guess. There was also a John Madray in Charleston. I found him on a death index in the Charleston County Library. The spelling of the last name varies from one record to another. I accept Madry, Maddray, Madrey and even Madary as variations.
