Hi,
According to the biographic notes on Joseph Medill (Madill is the same name) the name has a French origin and this branch of the family came from Ireland. They lived on a farm between Drum, County Monaghan and Cootehill, County Cavan
Tha's a distance of about 3 miles or 4.8 km.The Madill name intersts me because my gg grandfther's sister Margaret married William Madill in 1818 just before they migrated to Canada. They weremarried in the Church of Ireland and his family was so insensed at that he changed the spelling to Medill. I have quite a bit of information on this family and I may be able to put you in touch with another who has additional information.
