Maddocks in Devon, England
Louisa Maddock born in Devonport about 1859 had a half brother Alfred Pope (we think). He was definitely born in 1859. So did they share parent(s) only by marriage not by any blood at all? We think Louisa's father (or was it step father?) was in the navy and died around the turn of the century, having a posh funeral in Portsmouth (or Plymouth?). There's also talk of someone else in the family inheriting the chemist's shop. Who? Where? Alfred's father was Samuel Pope, his mother ? Ritt, Kitt? Louisa 's parents may have been William Maddock and Grace Lamble. Did Grace die early? Did Alfred's father die early? Did Louisa's Dad marry Alfred's Mum?
Alfred did some time in the merchant navy and never married. Louisa married Samuel Whymark and ended her days in Eastbourne having had several children (one of whom had a second name of Nelson - a reference to the family's seafaring past?)
Love to hear from anyone with an interest in these names. What a tangle!
