I too was told my grandfather Vitagliano Maddaloni was from Naples. I've since discovered Naples is not only a city, it is also an area (we call them counties, not sure what they call it in Italy). With much research and a trip to Italy, I discovered my Maddaloni family tree was from:
Marigliano, Napoli, Campania, Italy.

Though a 20 minute train ride from downtown Naples, Marigliano is in the Napoli (or Naples) area of Campania (we would call this a State, they call it a region). There are numerous Maddaloni's in the Napoli area.

I'm not sure if this helps. But good luck researching
