Dear Darlene,

I am a keen amateur genealogist and, prior to 2006, had managed to get back, with some certainty, to c.1650 in Chilmark. I was aware, however, that there were records of the Macey family going back as far as 1539 (namely to John Macy, who was granted a copyhold in that year) so I employed a professional genealogist to help me try and bridge the gap.

1. First of all, she translated John Macy's Will of 1575, as follows:

"In the name of god Amen xxiiiith day of Maye Anno Domini 1575 I John Maycie of the parishe of Chilmarke beinge sicke of body but perfitt of remembrance do make this my last will and testamente in manor and forme folowinge that is to saye First I geve and bequeth my soule unto god almightie and my bodye to be buried in our parish church of Chilmarke called St Margarete
Item I geve and bequeth unto our mother church of Sarum viiid Item I geve and bequeth unto my parish church of Chilmarke iiis iiiid
Item to be buried in the church I geve and bequeth vis viiid
Item I geve and bequeth to my sonne Thomas Maycie a greate crocke and one bruinge caudren
Item I geve and bequeth to my sonne Thomas Maycis vii children vii shepe to be endefferently chosen
Item I geve and bequeth unto my sonne Phillipe one greate panne ii pewter dyshes and xxs of mony
Item I geve and bequeth to my sonne William Maycie xxs of mony
Item I geve and bequeth to my Daughter Anstie xxs of monye
Item I geve and bequeth to eight of my sonne in lawe Richard Rogers children iiii busshelles of Barley to be Devided emongest them
Item I geve and bequeth to my Daughter Agnes Roger vis viiid
Item I geve to my daughter Ales Andrewes A panne the which she hath in her kepinge
Item I geve to John Maycie the sonne of Richard Maycie A wendlinge calfe of the pryce of xs
Item I geve unto Agnes Maycie and helinge Maycie the Daughters of Thomas Maycye one cowe to be equally devided betwene the ii systers
Item I geve unto John Maycie the sonne of Thomas Maycie one shepe
Item I geve unto my god sonne John clare vid
Item I geve unto my god sonne John Snowe vid
Item my will is to request Christofer helme and William Stephens to be the oeverseers of this my will and to have for their paynes xxd a pice.
Item all the rest of my goodes ungeven or bequethed I geve and bequeth unto Anne my wife and Richard my sonne whom I make my executors of this my last will and testament
In wittnes wherof Christofer helme John Clare William Stephen Sir John Morton Curate"

2. By reference to the manorial records, the parish registers and wills, she then came up with the following tentative pedigree:

JOHN MACYE ALIAS BANSTONE (1) = ANNE ?
        (Yeoman)
b.1500 – 1510
d.1575

John THOMAS Philippe William Anstie Agnes Ales Richard
= AGNES

JOHN William Agnes Helinge Thomas

John William THOMAS GEORGE Richard

Accordingly, it is thought that Thomas of Nantucket was the great grandson of the original John Macy, and the son of John Macy; this might explain why Thomas' own son was called John. He may also have had a brother, George, who was recorded in Taunton, MA, at around the same time.

I should point out that Thomas Macy was born before the Bishop's Transcripts (which date from 1611) and there are no Chilmark documents which refer to him (at least with any certainty). That he is John Macy's direct descendant, however, is unlikely to be in doubt.

Kind regards

Edward Macey-Dare
