Ann, I have just seen your post and feel I should clear something up.
Yes the names steming from THOMAS...Thoson,Thompson etc could in fact be listed as SEPTS BUT, those names are NOT SEPTS of Clan MacTavish OR in the GAELIC CLANN MacTAMHAIS. As you notice quite different from CLANN MacTHOMAIS which is MacThomas.
As it is left to Chiefs to state what names are recognised by them as their SEPTS much confuasion exists. However, as is documented Thomson, Thompson and vareint spellings are from MacTAMHAIS, MacTAVISH therefore they are not a SEPT but are the Clan.
