Listed here is a four generation report on the descendants of Alexander Stevenson and Elizabeth Gilmore of South Carolina; Maury Co., TN; Caldwell Co., KY; and their descendants of Maury Co., TN; Caldwell Co., KY; Lawrence Co., AL; Menard Co., IL; Sangamon Co., IL; Macon Co., IL; Jasper Co., MO; Miami Co., KS; and Teller Co., CO.

If anyone connects to this line, please contact me. I have photos from the mid to late 1800s and early 1900s for some of the descendants listed. I am currently working with a group of researchers on these descendants and other possible related lines in Caldwell Co., KY and Menard Co., IL. I am also transcribing some Caldwell Co., KY deeds pertaining to this Stevenson/Stephenson line.

William Stevenson purchased land in Sangamon Co., IL on 22 May 1830 from James Alexander. On the following day, 23 May 1830, Miles Stevenson also bought land from James Alexander; William Stevenson signed as a witness, along with Thomas Clark.

William Stevenson made additional land purchases on 23 May 1830 from Henry Morgan and on 27 Jun 1830 from Wm. Morgan.


The William Stevenson family appears in the 1830 Federal Census of Sangamon County IL, on property next door to Miles Stevenson. The household of William Stevenson, page 20/153 lists the following:

1 male under 5 yrs. 1 female under 5 yrs.

1 male 5-10 yrs. 1 female 5-10 yrs.

1 male 10-15 yrs. 1 female 10-15 yrs.

1 male 20-30 yrs.

1 male 30-40 yrs. 1 female 30-40 yrs.

The 1830 census also lists the following heads of families: Robert Stephenson (age 30_40) living near John and Thomas Constant; Robert Stephenson (age 60-70) living next to Mordecai Mobley; James Stevenson (age 40-50 with a male age 80-90 in the family) living near John Clemmons - this is the James & Margaret Clinton Stephenson family of SC and Caldwell Co., KY; and James Stevenson (age 20-30).


When Calvin Stevenson died 21 Dec 1833, the names of Milton Stephenson, Alexander Stevenson, and Thomas C. Stevenson appeared in the probate file #158 in Sangamon Co., IL.

On the 26th day of Sept 1835, William and Miles Stevenson signed the guardian bond (file 244 in Sangamon Co., IL) for Thomas Calvin Stevenson (born 29 Apr 1834), minor heir of Calvin Stevenson, deceased. William was appointed guardian. On 20 Oct 1851, William resigned as guardian because he had "removed out of the state of Illinois".

p. 75 "Miles Stevenson, of Tennessee, came to Menard County about 1830, and settled on land adjoining that of Matthias Yoakum on the east.

He married Deborah Irwin. He and his wife were yearly campers at the [revival] meetings at Rock Creek.

They had seven children. One son, John, a soldier in the Civil War, was captured at Guntown, Miss., and was a prisoner in the Andersonville prison at the close of the Rebellion." 24

p. 31 "As has been said, camp meetings were held every year in a grove where the manse now stands and were well attended. On the north side of the ground were the camps of the Ayers, Irwins and Miles Stevenson . . . all close to the camp meeting shed, near which was a spring. Some of the camps were made of logs, some of boards, and others were cloth tents." 24

p. 5: "Within my memory, Beardstown, seventy miles away, was the market. Father told of an eccentric, independent old neighbor, Mr. Miles Stephenson of Rock Creek, who walked and drove his hogs to Beardstown and with the money received bought a bolt of muslin. He started home carrying the bolt on his shoulder. Three times, for one reason or another, he caught up with the stage and passed it. Finally, the stage driver halted, hailed him and asked him if he would like a ride. ' No sir,' answered Mr. Stephenson, ' I don't wish to be detained.' " 33

According to the report from Lula Irwin, David Stevenson was a bachelor. He lived with his brother, James M., until James died. He then lived at Salisbury, IL.21

Sangamon Co., IL Death Certificate # 20504 provided the death date and place, birth date and place, and name of Sarah Deborah Irwin as his mother, mother born in Ohio, father born in TN. Place of burial - Salisbury, IL

Medical:

David F. Stevenson stepped on a rusty nail at the farm of Arthur and Debby Irwin Brown in Cantrall, IL. As a result, he developed gangreen in his leg, and eventually died of the ensuing complications.

Death certificate # 20504 for David Foster Stevenson lists cause of death as exhaaustion _ e mos. 3 days; arterio sclerosis - many years; and senile gangrene 2 months. Signed by Dr. J. R. Irwin, Salisbury, IL, 15 Apr 1919. Physician attended him from 11 Feb 1919 until 14 Apr 1919.

"We now have a letter (or several small pages of family information) that was in the second Stephenson bible. We have the envelope and it is hard to read, but it is addressed to "Mrs. Nancy Brunner, Pleasant Plains Sangamon ill". The post marks are hard to read also, but seems to have come from MO and also marked in Pl Ju 4 Ill, which would be at least 2 months later. It says it is a "True Copy" and it appears to have been written by Nancy Fletcher Stephenson.

At the end of the first part it has "Nancy Stephenson died December 1, 1887" written in a different hand. A page later (written in Nancy's hand) it has this:
