Seeking Barra ancestors of John 'Brown' McNeil (Nova Scotia)

A few years ago I hit the proverbial brick wall while searching for details of my ancestor, John 'Brown' McNeil, who originally came from Barra. I'm hoping that in the meantime something new may have come to light.

In a nutshell: My John 'Brown' McNeil left Barra in about 1773-75 with the 82nd Regiment, which fought under Cornwallis in the American War of Independence. At the close of the war, the regiment was disbanded in Halifax. John 'Brown' McNeil stayed a while in Middle River, where he met his future wife, Mary Grant. They were married in Arisaig. One of their children was Janet McNeil, who was born at Malignant Cove in June 1790 (and died there in July 1890).
(Janet was the widow of Angus McDonald (Malcolm).)

Apparently John 'Brown' McNeil and John 'Breac' McNeil and their families settled at the Cove in 1789.

Do the names (John 'Brown' McNeil/Mary Grant) and/or facts ring a bell with anyone here? I'd like very much to have details of John 'Brown' McNeil's life on Barra (i.e. parents' names, etc.) The story goes that in fact his older brother had been drafted into the army by the British recruiting officers but John, being 22 years old and single, asked to be taken as his substitute.

Any assistance much appreciated.

Donna
