OPEN DIALOGUE FOR NAME VARIATIONS

Hi,
Has anyone during their researching seen the following?
I've been researching my father's line in Kentucky. Surname MUCK. A family story says that the name was McMillan and changed to Muck for some reason. On a recent request sent to the KY Archives, it came back with this "note to staff" written across the top, "look for McMillan or Muck - as this family used both spellings". This seems to make the family story a true one. I have written to the author of this note asking what they know.
Then while researching Carter Co., KY, (where my brick wall has come up), I checked a county next to it, Elliott Co.In a tax list of 1865 the surname Muckmillion popped up. This was the first time I have ever seen this surname.
Thanks
Joy
