Dear Allan,
How nice to hear from you, and how interesting to hear that you also descend from Ewan Og.Unfortunately, only the males seemed to be listed in our MacMillan family in the 1700s.
Angus MacMillan(1766-Nov. 1, 1841 - tombstone, MacMillan graveyard, Lot 19, 1, Finch Township, United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Ontario) first settled on Lot 20, Conc. 1, Finch Township, then he owned the sawmill on Lot 14, Conc. 3, Finch. He had a large family but, unfortunately, on a move back from Florida about ten years ago I lost many family papers but from memory I can say that he had 'five' daughters who married MacMillans(I descend from two of them)two of them marrying 'John' macMillans, one, Mary, b. Achnacarry 1794, married Duncan Ban MacMillan(baptised Kilmallie, Oct. 1783 - born Glennevis of Glenpean family).Duncan Ban(1783-1861) settled on Lot 23 -3 Finch Township(See books, MacMillans, Amazon.com, and Lochaber Emig., and, Bygone Lochaber - by Somerled MacMIllan). My gtgt grandfather, John MacMillan of Callich (a cousin of Angus)daughter, Margaret, b. 1819, married Duncan Cameron(1808-1890)Lot 21, 4 Finch, were my gt grandparents;Alexander MacMillan of Callich, John's brother, settled on Lot 16, 2, Finch Township. He and John are also mentioned under the Callich segment in Bygone Lochaber.
I have a letter which was written to my father's cousin(Cassie MacMillan) in 1962 by Somerled MacMillan outlining the family line.Cassie descended from the Callich MacMillans through her father and through the Corriebuie MacMillans through her mother(also mentioned in Callich segment).Cassie was about ninety eight years of age the last time I had a visit with her and she was very articulate and gave me the famly papers. At the time she lived with my grandaunt Maggy MacLean and her daughter, Lily, in Finch Village(Lily was Cassie's sister in law!).
Would you like a copy of this letter?I have given the original letter to a descendant of Alexander who lives in Williamstown, Ontario.
My Grandmother, Catharine SutherlandCameron(1854-1949) and her husband(Donald Cameron 1847-1920 - tombstone, MacMillan graveyard, Lot 19-1, Finch) were cousins through the MacMillans and Camerons(Cluns). My
Grandmother, Catharine, was the grand daughter of Duncan Ban MacMillan and his wife, Mary MacMillan, daughter of
Angus MacMillan of Callich(son of Ewan Og).My family is a real tangle which confuses local genealogists!Fortunately, my grandmother Cameron and Cassie MacMillan were very much a part of my life when I was young and I can thank them (and my Dad) for having so much info on family; otherwise, I would never have been able to 'trace' myself... I grew up within family history.
Somerled MacMillan was the family historian although, in his book, he did not include a good bibliography. He had access to family papers.Your gtgt, Christian, would have been a niece to My Angus. It is amazing how the old first names carried on down through the generations.
Allan, thank you so much for all the info on your branch.Hopefully, you will be able to find out the name of Ewan Og's wife.It is rather strange that females were not included in family papers(it seems to be only in certain respects - i.e. Duncan Ban's parents were John MacMillan of Glennevis(1729-1820, and his wife, Christian MacCalman,(McCalmans buried at Banavie).McCalman is an ancient
MacMillan name.
Until next time,
Sincerely, Margaret Cameron
Long Sault, Ontario KOC 1PO
P.S. - my gt grandfather through my mother was Lachlan MacLean, born Isle of Mull(on Torloisk - Redal/Druimighia)Aug. 8, 1826, d. Au. 1904 - tombstone, Finch Cem).
