Gordon,

A cadet line of the MacLeod's means that particular family is descended from the chief's younger brother. Obviously the chiefship is always directly descended from Leod. This is usually supported with documentation at some point way back. The Talisker family is the senior cadet line of the MacLeod's of Harris and was offered the chiefship when Sir Reginald MacLeod - the last male heir died in the 1930's. The Talisker family was living in Australia and uninvolved with clan affairs - so they gave it up to Sir Reginald's daughter Flora MacLeod. Since that time the chiefship has gone with the real estate of Dunvegan and Dame Flora's son John Gordon became John MacLeod of MacLeod and since his death is has recently passed to his son Hugh MacLeod of MacLeod, the current 30th Chief.

I believe that DNA has revealed that some cadet families were not who they thought they were and are not descended from Leod. The bulk of the MacLeod participants, currently through Family Tree DNA do appear to be descended from Leod.

The Viking connection has really not be proven or disproven since our DNA haplogroup is found all over western Europe - including a sizeable segment of Norway's population. We know through tradition though that we were Viking or the Gall-Gael - or the Norse-Gaels.

Please get DNA tested. We need all the participants possible.

Best Regards,

Daniel MacLeod
