Further to my note on the Colbecks family, I asked my cousin to look up various references in my old home and she responded yesterday (Monday) to say that most of the information relating to the family are the result of Willie's work to the Gaelic Society of Inverness which you will find in their Transactions (Transactions of The Gaelic Society of Inverness). These are available in most Reference Libraries. The Volumes you require are Vol 46, 47, 48 and 51. Most, if not all, of the updated information in the Clan MacLeod Society book on the Colbecks are drawn from Willie's writings. Before the last War he was up at Easter Ross and whilst there, knowing that the local landowners' family who lived in a Mansion House nearby had a couple of centuries previously been Chamberlains of Lewis asked them if they had any documents relating to Lewis was told they had a large room-full. He asked if he could see them and was told if he wanted them he could have the stuff as it was of no interest to them. Indeed it may well have been thrown out. Willie arranged transport and took these volumnous papers to his Edinburgh house where he laborously went through them compiling Lewis genealogies. Interested folk wondered where all the information came from as there was so much of it and all of it from original rental rolls, factors records, estate letters and government correspondence to Lewis, etc.. etc., Additionally some of the writing was in Gaelic and could only be read by Gaelic scholars of whom he was certainly one. As I often visited him he used to drip-feed me with photocopies of things which were of interest to me. Thus much of what you might want to read is contained in the Transactions of that Society and it is of course written in English. Unfortunately I do not have the Transaction Volumes here to give you the page numbers but in any event you would need to read the context leading up to his conclusions relating to the Colbecks families.
