Cathy,

When you visit Skye, have a look at the island of Raasay too. The McLeods of Dunvegan (Skye) generally sided with the Hanoverians in the 1745 uprising, whereas the McLeods of Raasay (my ancestors) sided with Prince Charles Edward. John McLeod (9th Laird of Raasay, and my g5 grandfather, sheltered Bonny Prince Charlie for a while on Raasay while the English were hunting for him after the Battle of Culloden.

If you haven't already done so, read Samuel Johnson's and Boswell's account of their journey in the Hebrides, when they visited Skye and Raasay.

Best wishes,
Brian Duncan
