Dear Forum participants,
I am researching my maternal great-great-great grandfather, James MacLean, b. 1785, Inverness-shire, d. 1859, Pt Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia.
He was a cordwainer (ie shoemaker), and emigrated to NS sometime in the early 1800s, first to Antigonish Co (Lochaber, where family legend has it he built a stone house), and, latterly, to the Strait of Canso area.
He was married to a Katherine, surname unknown, and was, apparently, of the Catholic faith (and buried at Lower River Inhabitants' RC chuchyard).
Both his known children, however, were Protestant (initially C of E, later Wesleyan Methodist): Charles, 1819-1892, shoemaker and shoe store owner, m. Mary Ann Reeves and Mary, m. William Philpott.
Despite all the detail above, the sources are (largely) anecdotal, and there are no records I can find about James MacLean--immigrants pssenger lists, census records, etc...--aside from the old MacLean family Bible which records his date of birth and death.
So any and all information relating to James MacLean is welcome.

PS Angus Maclean, who is the subject of one of the threads on this site is James' grandson, and Charles' son; a mariner from Pt Hawkesbury, b. 1850 and d. at sea, 1883. He was a Methodist married to Catholic, Jane Proctor (dau of Edward and Nancy--Delaney--Proctor) of Lower River Inhabitants. He had three children: Angus (1876, m. Henrietta Jane Malcolm), Edward (1879) and Annie (1881 m. Pettipas?).
